Until recently, the yard surrounding this house was overrun with dogs — all of whom were in desperate need of assistance, writes thedodo.

“Almost every dog lacked hair.”
Puppies were discovered nursing different momma dogs — they went to whichever momma was closest,” Guardians of Rescue, the organization assisting the dogs’ recovery and placement, wrote on Facebook last week.

The dogs were infested with fleas and parasites, and they all had sarcoptic mange.
Many of the dogs were too scared to approach the people attempting to help them.
Animal control officers had to capture several of the dogs in order to bring them to safety.
“No one knows for sure why they allowed these dogs to get to this point,” Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, told The Dodo, adding that the people living on the property were arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

“Several of the dogs were in such poor condition that they unfortunately did not survive,” Guardians of Rescue wrote.
The dogs that did survive bear the physical and emotional scars of neglect.
Even after being brought to safety, one dog appeared too terrified to raise his head.

Because Lawrence County lacks an animal shelter, Guardians of Rescue is assisting in the placement of the dogs so that they can be treated for their condition and, once fully recovered, adopted.
One dog was rescued just in time for her puppies to be born.

“The dogs are getting better thanks to love and medical treatment,” Misseri added.
Despite their ordeal, the dogs are finally beginning to lift their heads, as if anticipating a new life.

The dogs were almost unrecognizable after several weeks of treatment and regaining their trust in people.
And many people began to form families.
“Many of the dogs have been adopted, and you can see the difference in their skin,” Misseri said.
“They’re doing fantastic.”
