Sick baby cow lies on the ground all alone until dog comes to help

Lewis, the orphan baby cow, was sick and fighting for his life when he arrived at The Gentle Barn.Sky, the therapy dog, was instrumental in Lewis’ quick recovery.Ellie Laks and Jay Weiner, founders of the Gentle Barn, adopted an orphaned calf in 2020.

They had saved him from a slaughterhouse, where his mother had died. He’d only been a week.Because he was also a fighter, they named him John Lewis Thunderheart.

Lewis was in poor health when he arrived at The Gentle Barn.”He was suffering from severe pneumonia. He breathed loudly and raspily. He had a strong cough.”He had a very high fever,” Ellie explained.

Lewis also did not receive enough colostrum to build a stronger immune system as a result of his stressful birth environment. That is why, when he became ill with pneumonia, he fought for his life. They knew he couldn’t survive in the barn, so they took him inside their air-conditioned house. He required a clean and cool environment, and this way, they will be able to care for him around the clock.

Another animal that lived inside the house would turn out to be a huge blessing for Lewis.Sky is his name.Sky was adopted by The Gentle Barn from his previous owner, who couldn’t keep up with his energy level. They weren’t supposed to adopt him, but Sky turned out to be an excellent therapy dog.He can make people laugh, soften the hearts of those who are angry, and calm those who are nervous.

That’s why he was the ideal companion for Lewis as he recovered.”Sky protected him, soothed him, and would lie down next to him and curl up beside him,” Ellie explained.”We just kept pouring love and comfort into him until he started to heal slowly.”

When Lewis was strong enough to go outside, they noticed Lewis and Sky had formed a strong bond.”They scuffle and run around the yard.”Sky is as mouthy as a puppy, and Lewis is as wonky as a cow, but they make it work and understand each other,” Ellie explained. And when Ellie took Lewis on walks around the farm and introduced him to the other cows, Sky was there to help Lewis adjust to his new life on the farm.

Lewis was only 50 pounds when he arrived a week later. He’s now two years old and weighs over a thousand pounds. He’s now significantly larger than Sky.They’re not as physical with each other anymore because they know there’s a significant weight difference between them. But that doesn’t stop them from showing their affection for one another.Lewis will collapse on the ground, and Sky will smother him. He’ll lick Lewis and then lie down next to him.

There’s so much to be thankful for when you see Lewis and Sky together.”What I like best about them is that no matter how old or big they get, their love never dies,” Ellie said of their relationship.”We see a dog and a cow.But to John Lewis and Sky, they only see friends, family, and love.”
