Psychologist Believes That Dogs Might Dream About The Humans They Love

When a dog dreams vividly during his sleep, sometimes even moving or barking softly, it’s always amusing to see, and most dog owners are curious about what their dogs are dreaming.Dr. Deirdre Barrett, a Harvard psychologist, has spent years researching human sleep behavior.Dr. Barrett also learned about how animals dream along the way.

Mammals, including dogs, have nearly identical sleep cycles to humans, and Dr. Barrett believes “that certainly makes it the best guess that other mammals are dreaming, too,” in an interview with People.Dogs, like humans, go through a stage in the sleep cycle known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM), which is when mammals dream.

When asked what dogs may be dreaming about, Dr. Barrett says, “Because dogs are generally extremely attached to their human owners, it’s likely your dog is dreaming of your face, your smell, and pleasing or annoying you.”

Many pet owners wonder if there is anything they can do to ensure that their dogs only dream about pleasant things, and Dr. Barrett says, “The best way to give ourselves or our children better dreams is to have happy daytime experiences and to get plenty of sleep in a safe and comfortable environment.”
