According to ilovemydogsomuch, a pregnant mama dog was abandoned at the Boone Area Humane Society after she had been in labor for 24 hours.
She had an emergency C-section and coded twice afterward, but she was eventually stabilized. She received a blood transfusion and was closely monitored in the ICU at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
“The vets at ISU also informed us that this girl is a senior dog who has had multiple litters of puppies in the past,” the Boone Area Humane Society wrote on Facebook.
“She should have been enjoying her golden years, but instead she was bred and then dumped when her labor became difficult.”
Mama dog gave birth to 21 puppies, but sadly, all of them died despite veterinarians doing everything they could to save them.
The pups were all underdeveloped, and with 21 puppies, there was no way they could have gotten enough nutrients while in utero.
The mama dog, now named Ruthie, is progressing well, eating on her own and standing up to go outside. She has a very sweet personality and has since been discharged from the hospital to live with her new foster family, where she will continue her recovery.
Meanwhile, the Humane Society is doing everything they can to charge the person who allowed Ruthie to suffer, but they say it’s always an uphill battle due to Iowa’s lax animal protection laws.
