Hedgehog Hit By Car Had 5 Tiny Reasons To Keep Going

This injured hedgehog refused to give up, but in doing so, she saved far more than just herself.

A Good Samaritan in Israel discovered the animal clinging to life on a highway after an apparent vehicle strike last month and took her to the Israeli Wildlife Hospital in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv.
Vet staff were assessing her injuries when they discovered the likely reason for the hedgehog’s determination to live.

An X-ray revealed that she was pregnant with five tiny babies who were all depending on her for survival.

Fortunately, the nursing staff was able to stabilize the expectant mother, keeping her warm and well-fed while she recovered from a head wound.
And, sure enough, when the time came last month, she was able to give birth to a healthy litter of hoglets.

The dedicated hedgehog parent, whose refusal to give up ensured the babies’ survival, is now working to ensure they have the best possible start in life.

“Despite her injury, the spiky mother is recovering and breastfeeding her young faithfully,” rescuers wrote online.
“She will soon recover completely and return to nature with her babies.”

The Wildlife Hospital, according to ISRAEL21c, cares for 3,000 injured animals each year with the goal of reintroducing them into the wild.
