Grizzly Bear ‘Super Mom’ Gives Birth To Her 17th Cub Despite Her Old Age

Even at the grand age of 24, the wild grizzly bear in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park is still producing cubs.

Grizzlies only live for 26 years in the wild, but that hasn’t stopped this super mom from giving birth to a litter of four cubs.Four cubs in a single litter for a grizzly bear is unusual, even before considering the grizzly’s age.

Known as Grizzly 399, she became well-known for her frequent appearances alongside roadsides with her family, prompting the creation of social media accounts in her honor. It is believed that the’super-mom’ learned to avoid males who have been known to kill young bear cubs by using busy roads.

This strategy clearly paid off for Grizzly 399, who is now the most successful documented grizzly mother of all time.

Kate and Adam Rice captured these stunning images.Adam had this to say about them:

“We weren’t sure she’d have cubs again at her advanced age, let alone four, which is extremely unusual.”

“We were shocked to learn she had four cubs; it seemed like her way of proving us wrong.”

Kate works as a photographer at the park and claims to be completely in love with bears.

“She frequently grazes in meadows near the road, giving people an excellent opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of a wild bear.”

“Female bears in national parks frequently raise their cubs near the roadside because it is believed they use people to protect their cubs from dangers such as male grizzlies who threaten the cubs.”

Grizzly 399 first made headlines in 2011 when she and her then five-year-old daughter began raising cubs in the same area. This is thought to be a first of its kind behavior, as the daughter adopted one of 399’s cubs and successfully raised it herself.
