Mississipi police deputy Todd Frazier was driving on a highway in Pearlington when a blue car parked on the side of the road caught his attention. When the driver didn’t respond to Frazier’s calls, he decided to take a closer look. Little did he know this was all a setup and he was about to be ambushed. As Frazier approached the blue car, two men appeared out of nowhere and jumped him.
The man in the car also joined in, and together the three gang members beat the officer and dragged him into the woods. Frazier fought back bravely but was overpowered and beaten within an inch of his life. The trio was about to finish him off, but he had one final weapon in his arsenal – his K-9 partner Lucas. Frazier pressed a button on his belt that unlocked his police car and let Lucas out. That was all Lucas needed. Lucas, a Belgian Malinois, charged into the woods and attacked the gang.
The gang didn’t know what hit them. Lucas had blood in his eyes, seeing his partner nearly dead. He attacked and bit all three gang members, causing them to flee for their lives. Frazier would later recall that although he couldn’t see what was going on due to his own blood covering his eyes, he could hear Lucas charging in. Frazier said he could hear him coming, growling and making these sounds… he sounded like a wolf. Frazier thought “Now he’s gonna get you.”
Frazier received extensive treatment due to the many stab wounds he received. Lucas had minor injuries and needed some teeth work. The gang members have not been brought to justice yet.
Lucas received numerous awards for his bravery, including the Heroic Dog Award from PETA and Hero of the Year Award from the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League.
