A dog has been dubbed the loneliest in the UK after spending more than 900 days at an animal shelter waiting to go to a loving home. ‘Lovable’ lurcher Sam, 8, has been in and out of the Destitute Animal Shelter in Bolton, Greater Manchester, since he was first rescued in 2014.
His last owner died in February 2017 – just six months after adopting Sam – and the dog has been at the shelter ever since, becoming its longest-serving resident. He is adored by shelter staff but they are desperate that he finds somewhere permanent. Through no fault of his own, Sam has been briefly re-homed three times before he was given back each time. Shelter manager Karen Rickards said he has been ‘so unlucky’.
Despite being playful and gentle, the shelter has been unable to find him a ‘forever’ home, she said. Karen added: ‘It’s never anything Sam’s done, he’s just constantly found himself in the wrong home at the wrong time. ‘He’s currently our longest-serving resident. And yet he’s playful, gentle and absolutely loves people.
‘We need to find someone who can take care of him. ‘He deserves nothing less than an amazing home.’ On its Facebook page the dog charity described Sam as a ‘great dog, he is fun and makes you laugh’.
Its post read: ‘He is playful and loving and can be quite lazy as well. ‘He will need to be the only pet in the home and kept on a lead when on a walk as he will chase small furies (cats, rabbits, small dogs etc.) ‘He is obsessed with teddy’s and likes rip them up to see what’s in side. He is fine with children.’
