With regards to ensuring their young, elephants don’t mess around. While on a photographic safari, explorers to the Sabi Sands in South Africa saw exactly how defensive elephants are with regards to their children. A crowd of elephants was crossing the street when a pack of wild canines shows up. The elephants sound the caution, as they have a few calves in the crowd.
Hurrying to encompass the calves, the elephants make a circle and face down the mutts. “Safari Guide Brent Leo-Smith came around the bend in Djuma Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sands, South Africa and found a group of elephants standing up to a pack of wild pooches,” the videographer told ViralHog.
“Elephants famously detest predators and were truly disturbed about these wild mutts being in their space.”
The elephants were most certainly upset by the canine predators but Leo-Smith says that he’s never heard of wild dogs attacking elephants (they are likely too large an animal to be considered prey). But the elephants aren’t taking any chances. Watch the encounter below:
Djuma Private Game Reserve is part of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, a private park bordering Kruger National Park and which does not allow hunting.
